The need for yearly recertification of backflow assemblies is mandated by the "Uniform Construction Code Act" N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.23(k) 4. and the National Standard Plumbing Code 2003 Edition section 10.56 b. In addition, "safe drinking water" is also mandated Federally, and in New Jersey, it is regulated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection under the "Safe Drinking Water Act" N.J.A.C. 7:10.
Upon initial installation, each assembly must be tested and certified. Once the device or devices are certified, a periodic testing schedule must be maintained in order to guarantee the continued effectiveness of such devices.
